Essentially we were working with a blank canvas, and just like giving toddlers some finger paints and butcher paper we ran with it. We always kept in mind that this is the opportunity for us to do whatever we want! So thats what we did!
our name, de stijl was the basis for our concept. we wanted everything within the space to reflect some aspect of the movement yet still be open for adaptation. the space reflects our approach in the creation of our culture, clean, precise, and functional. we were fortunate enough to have access to some extremely talented individuals throughout the process who were able to create some amazing features within and translate the concept to a reality.
Damien Gilley is a multi-disciplinary artist and educator in Portland, Oregon. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including Tetem Kunstruimte (Enschede, Netherlands), EastWestProject (Berlin, DE), MARC (Kivik, Sweden), Suyama Space (Seattle), Las Vegas Art Museum, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art (Omaha, NE), Arthouse (Austin), The Belfry (New York), the Art Museum of South Texas (Corpus Christi), and in Portland at Rocksbox, Linfield College, Wieden+Kennedy, the American Institute of Architects, the Pacific Northwest College of Art, and the Portland 2010 Biennial, among others. His work has been reviewed by Artforum.com, the Oregonian, Las Vegas Review Journal, the Austin Chronicle, Frame magazine (Amsterdam), IdN magazine (Hong Kong) and New American Paintings.
Eric Fairbanks is an industrial design engineer with over 10 years’ experience in the product design and development field. He has worked with top industry design teams from well established companies like Oakley Inc. to design driven start-ups such as KOR Water and VARO Baseball. He recently received Inc. magazine’s Best In Class Design award for his work on the KOR Nava hydration vessel. He has also taught product development and 3D CAD at the collegiate level for the past 7 years.
Eric prides himself in his craftsmanship and attention to detail. His strong background in both product design and design for manufacturability allow him to bring successful product to market from concept to production.
